Senior Product Engineer
Take features from idea to production and ship growth experiments to millions of shoppers.
About the role
We’re looking for an exceptional product engineer to help unlock the next stage of growth. We have a long list of fascinating ideas to build (plus hopefully many of your own!) and you’ll coordinate with teams, work through the tradeoffs, and ship winning improvements as fast as possible. You’ll own features from inception through release, with serious resources behind you. This role is in-person in our NYC office, working directly with the VP Engineering and CEO.
About the team
Turtles.com is the AI platform for marketplaces. We are growing extremely rapidly and we’re now at a $140M+ revenue pace (not GMV) with 30M+ US shoppers across our platforms. We are well-capitalized and profitable. We’ve grown 4x+ in the last year and believe we can do it again.
We’re a lean team of 65+ across NYC, Helsinki, and Hong Kong, organized around rapid experimentation, autonomous teams, and no bureaucracy. More than 10,000 new shoppers sign up every day, so every 1% lift is a serious win. We only care about building what’s on the critical path for our next 4x, and to become one of the largest companies in online shopping.
Turtles isn’t for everyone, and that’s intentional. If you’re energized by solving difficult problems quickly with lots of autonomy, you’ll thrive here.
Why this role matters
This is an unusual opportunity. The conventional trade-off is between scale and ownership: established companies provide capital, distribution, and leverage at the cost of autonomy, while startups provide ownership and speed at the cost of resources. This role is a rare combination of both. You’ll be sitting directly next to our CEO and VP Engineering every day and have unusual access to core decision making for our scale, with the resources of a company doing nine figures in revenue at your disposal. If you have a good idea in the morning, you can have it live by the end of the day.
What you’ll do
- Take features from idea to production.
- Run growth experiments on live traffic. New shopping formats, purchase flows, and UX tests, with your work immediately in the hands of hundreds of thousands of people.
- Ship clean UI inside our existing design system.
- Work across the full stack: React Native, PHP with Symfony, MySQL.
What we’re looking for
- 5+ years shipping production software with strong engineering fundamentals. Hundreds of millions of dollars and billions of events flow through our system. We have a high bar because we have to.
- Ships fast without much hand-holding. You should be able to unblock yourself, and when you’re on the wrong path you notice quickly.
- Strong empathy for users and good UX instincts.
- Responsibly AI-pilled. You take full advantage of modern tools while still understanding what you ship.
- Exhilarated by results. You care about shipping quality work, especially through the lens of whether it was a high-EV bet.
Nice to have
- Worked in consumer apps at scale.
- Ex-founder or experience at an early stage company.
- Experience in our stack. You’ll ramp quickly even if you haven’t touched PHP before.
How we hire
A short, focused process designed to respect your time. The specifics vary by role, but here’s the format we typically aim for:
- Intro call with our VP Engineering (30 min).
- Working session (90 min): given a high level product problem, design the user journey, and then design the system behind it.
- References.
- Visit our office in SoHo and spend 1-2 hours with our CEO and VP Engineering.
- Offer within 2-3 days.
Turtles is an equal-opportunity employer. We hire people from every background and we’re committed to building a team that reflects the diversity of the shoppers, brands, and marketplaces we serve.
